Protect National Parks by Demanding Congress Value Them at More Than $0

Target: Donald Trump, President-elect of the United States

Goal: Don’t make it easy to sell off federal lands to corporations by valuing them at $0.

The new Republican-controlled Congress passed a rules package making it easier to transfer federal lands, such as national parks, to the states. Although this may sound like a good idea, this would allow states that need the money to sell off these lands to oil companies, logging companies and other large corporations. Therefore we must take action now to ensure that our coveted federal lands don’t end up in the wrong hands.

The new rule allows Congress to ignore any financial loss that comes from the transfer and loss of this property. Usually they would have to offset any losses from this transfer by creating revenue elsewhere, but this is no longer the case. Congress has essentially valued our national parks and other federal lands at $0. By valuing the land at nothing, the land can then be sold or given away while skipping many of the usual steps required in such an action.

With the effects of climate change becoming more and more apparent every day, these refuges for wildlife, as well as the public, are a necessity. Our government can not lead the way into further environmental destruction. Our country must be a leader in combating laws like the one Congress has just passed.

If this law continues to be in place, the future of our national parks will be in jeopardy. This makes it far too easy for our government to give this land to states that could easily sell the property to corporations for profit. We need these ecosystems for the well-being of our species and the wildlife that surround us. Sign this petition to demand that our government put more value on these lands, instead of making it far too easy to give them away.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President-elect Trump,

Congress has just streamlined the process in which federal lands can be transferred to the states and sold by valuing these lands at $0. This endangers our precious national parks, and the resources contained within them. If it becomes too easy to sell this land, we will lose all of it for future generations.

Climate change is happening, and the effects will only become greater as time goes on. These national parks are sanctuaries for wildlife as well as humans and will be even more necessary as we face climatic shifts. Use your power to keep federal lands under the protection of the government and out of the hands of corporations that seek to use them for profit.

Save the national parks and the essential ecosystems that lie within them by putting more value on these lands to make it harder for states to sell them.

Sincerely,

A very dangerous move by Congress, which would probably result in much more devastation and destruction of wildlife, forests, lakes, rivers and land. It would turn America into a wasteland. This land should be protected!
