Target: Prince Muhammad Bin Nayef, Saudi Minister of Interior
Goal: Release a male activist who was imprisoned for campaigning to end male guardianship laws in Saudi Arabia.
A man was recently sentenced to a year in prison and fined $8,000 for actively campaigning against male guardianship laws in Saudi Arabia. Male guardianship laws reduce women to their relationship with males, making them possessions rather than individuals. This man should be released from prison and allowed to continue his activism without having his freedom threatened.
Despite thousands of petitions and hundreds of demonstrations, the Saudi government has remained deaf on the issue of gender equality in its country. The biggest legal obstacle for women in the region is male guardianship laws. These laws require women to obtain permission from an adult male guardian to do simple tasks like attend school or travel throughout the city. These regressive laws are opposed by many in the country, but the threat of fines and prison make people reluctant to speak out.
This man should have the right to speak out against his government’s mistreatment of women without the fear of having to suffer in a hellish prison. If the government is so afraid of criticism, then it should re-evaluate the reasoning behind its legal institutions.
Perhaps if the country is continually criticized by both its own populace and by foreign countries, then the government will be forced to make real progressive changes on the way that women are treated by the legal system. Sign this petition to demand the release of this activist that has sacrificed so much in defense of women’s rights.
Dear Prince Muhammad bin Nayef,
A man has been sentenced to a year in prison and fined $8,000 for opposing male guardianship laws. This man should not be punished for arguing for something that he believes in. Punishing this man for being outspoken on this subject only shows that the Saudi government is afraid of the strength of this man’s argument.
Male guardianship laws reduce women to their relationship with males making them possessions rather than individuals. These laws are only a way of controlling women by requiring them to obtain permission from an adult male guardian to do simple tasks like attend school, get a job, obtain healthcare or travel throughout the city. These laws threaten the safety and happiness of women in your country. This man should be applauded for his efforts to protect women by giving them equality.
Release this man and allow him to continue his campaign against these laws. If your laws are morally just then his argument is no threat to you.
