Target: Gerard Baker, Editor-in-Chief of the Wall Street Journal
Goal: Hold Donald Trump accountable for his lies in order to protect the American people.
The Wall Street Journal will not point out lies and falsities uttered by President-elect Donald Trump in an effort to not appear biased toward the controversial figure. However, if the press does not challenge Trump, who is left to provide a check on his power and share the truth with the American public?
The Wall Street Journal will instead publish what Trump says and then publish its own independent findings, leaving the reader to decide. However, the press has a duty and responsibility to ensure that truth overcomes lies. When Trump blatantly lies, such as he did when he claimed he saw thousands of Muslims in New Jersey cheering during 9/11, or when he claimed that he had always been against the war in Iraq (despite audio evidence showing otherwise), or as he did during the debates when he constantly denied his degrading remarks toward women, the press must point these falsehoods out to the public.
Donald Trump ran a campaign based on lies, lies that the rest of his party will not challenge. The most horrific events in history have been based on lies, both big and small. We cannot afford for Trump to get away with his lies. Without the federal government checking and balancing his power, the power of the press is all that is left. The press must stand up to Trump when he seeks to exploit his power.
Dear Mr. Baker,
You recently announced that your publication, the Wall Street Journal, will not blatantly call out President-elect Donald Trump’s lies. Instead, you will let readers decide whether or not Trump’s words are true. As we have seen over the past year, Trump’s supporters will willingly believe anything he says, while Trump’s political allies and rivals refuse to challenge him.
As Trump’s party takes control of every branch of government, it appears that there will be little check on his power. His lies, if not challenged, will be free to grow and flourish. History has shown us the tragedies that can occur when an authoritarian spreads his lies so freely. With no one else to challenge Trump, it is the duty of the press to call out his blatant lies and protect the American people and their democracy. I ask that your publication hold Trump accountable for his lies.
