Cancel Book Deal with Homophobic, Racist Author

Target: Carolyn Reidy, President and CEO of Simon and Schuster

Goal: Retract $250,000 book deal with writer known for spreading hate speech.

Milo Yiannopoulos, who has made a name for himself as an alt-right journalist, announced that he signed a $250,000 book deal with Simon and Schuster’s conservative imprint, Threshold Editions. Though he was recently banned from Twitter for harassing actress Leslie Jones, this major publisher is supplying a new platform for his bigoted views and is funding the publication of his hate speech.

Obviously, Simon and Schuster believes it will make a lot of money off this book due to the immense amount of money offered to Yiannopoulos, who will no doubt receive additional royalties after the book is released. The book, which is allegedly titled “Dangerous,” is already hitting the top spots on bestseller lists, and the publisher will likely spend more to market this title than it will many of its other upcoming publications. Yiannopoulos has two other books, one of which allegedly plagiarizes lyrics by Brittney Spears, Mariah Carey, and Tori Amos.

Simon and Schuster released a blasé statement about how they do not believe they are condoning sexism and bigotry by publishing work by an alt-right author. Many in the literary community have already pledged to boycott the publisher, including some of the company’s own authors. Sign this petition to add your voice and demand that Simon and Schuster refuse to publish the book.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Reidy,

Publishing anything by Milo Yiannopoulos condones the spread of hate speech. You are literally creating and marketing a book only of interest to a group of people known for harassing others. Twitter had the wherewithal to ban this man from spreading his bigoted ideas, yet Simon and Schuster has decided to help him grow.

It is alleged that Yiannopoulos does not write most of the pieces published under his name for Breitbart, and many are concerned he will use his staff to produce his book as well. The literary community is ashamed that you would give so much money to a man so undeserving of fame or fortune. I am writing to demand that you go against your contract with Yiannopoulos and refuse to publish his book.

Sincerely,

Simon and Schuster: a once-respected publishing firm. I understand that it is all about money, but there should also be some sense of responsibility for what is published. If they publish this book, then I will no longer buy anything from Simon and Schuster or any of its subsidiaries. I choose not to support hatred and intolerance.

do not send it to simon and schuster! boycott simon and schuster now!
