Target: President-elect Trump
Goal: Continue Barrack Obama’s attempts to make college tuition free.
New college graduates are greatly burdened by the amount of student loan debt they incur throughout their college education. It’s hard enough to find a job that pays well straight out of college, but add thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of debt from student loans, and the financial burden on these young adults is exorbitant. President Obama has pushed to make tuition for community college more affordable, and many states have programs to grant free tuition to certain students who qualify.
While some programs currently in place are funded by taxpayers’ money, the federal government can eliminate or lower that by putting its financial aid programs to better use. Two professors from the University of Wisconsin have done the math and can show that we already pay the bill of sending new students to college for free. In fact, if college was free to attend, the billions the federal government pays in financial aid programs would cover every student’s college tuition for two years.
Students who have taken advantage of the programs in certain states that grant free tuition are helping to close the gap between poor students and students who don’t need to struggle financially. Not only will free tuition nationwide lessen the financial burden places on new graduates, but it will help over time to lower the wage gap throughout the nation. Ask the Trump government to create a system that provides free tuition so young adults are not burdened with great financial strain right out of the gate on their way to adulthood.
Dear President-elect Trump,
College graduates struggle with a great financial burden when it comes to paying off their student loan debt. They already struggle with finding a decent job after graduation, why burden them further with debt? President Obama began the work of making college tuition free by proposing free tuition for students attending community college.
While free tuition for community colleges is a start, there must be more done to help ease the financial burden on our college graduates. The federal government can help by re-budgeting its financial aid programs to instead pay for universities’ expenses so American students can afford to get the higher education they need and deserve. Two professors from the University of Wisconsin have proven that the amount of financial aid the federal government gives to its students would cover the cost of sending every American to college for free for two years. Free tuition would not only help with Americans’ financial stress, but it would also give our students incentive to graduate from high school and continue on to college.
Free tuition will, over time, help to greatly decrease the wage gap throughout our nation. Please continue President Obama’s work to make college tuition free for Americans.
