Save Children From Lead Poisoning

Target: Jerry Brown, Governor of California

Goal: Protect children and families threatened by lead-laced water.

In the Fruitvale area of Oakland, California, the number of lead poisoning cases is even higher than in Flint, Michigan. Around 8% of the 500 children in the area tested positive for high levels of lead in their blood. The national average is about 2%, so the percentage in Fruitvale is almost four times the national average. The study also claims that over 3,000 neighborhoods across the country have higher numbers than those found in Flint.

It needs to be mentioned that African Americans make up almost 30% of Oakland’s population. This is often true for many cities that face this kind of contamination. This is a trend that needs to be stopped. Historical factors have pinned marginalized communities to areas that are dangerous to their health.

Lead can have devastating effects on the brain development and overall growth of a child. By being exposed to this level of contaminated water, the lives of these children and families are changed forever. Some children may even die from the effects of the lead in their water.

The lead in Fruitvale is called “legacy lead,” because it primarily is coming from old sources, like industrial waste, plumbing and lead paint. Up until the 1970’s lead was widely used, and most homes in this area of Oakland were built before the ban on lead. The legacy of racism and of lead is posing a very current problem for this community.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Brown,

Your state has a water crisis larger than that in Flint and it needs to be addressed. In Fruitvale, California, the percentage of children who have been exposed to high amounts of lead is almost four times the national average. This community also happens to be a heavily minority community, with approximately 30% African American.

The water in Fruitvale, according to a recent study, is worse than that in Flint. This is a problem that must be acknowledged. Children and minority communities do no deserve to have their resources contaminated and their lives ruined.

Clean water is not a privilege, it is a natural born right. The only reason some don’t have clean water is directly because of actions by others. Stop this problem before it is too late.

Use your power as Governor to solve your state’s water crisis and save the people of Fruitvale.

Sincerely,

Action should be taken immediately to clean up the water. This is absolutely inexcusable.
