Justice for Basketball Coach Allegedly Fired for Being Gay

Target: Marty Martin, President of Drake University in Iowa

Goal: Justice for gay basketball coach allegedly discriminated against by her school.

Courtney Graham, a former assistant basketball coach at Drake University in Iowa, was fired after the school met her girlfriend in 2014. She says that she was gradually stripped of her duties, left out of important meetings, subject to inter-office slander and eventually forced to leave her job. Graham has been unable to find another job since, likely due to the university disclosing her sexual orientation to prospective employers. Drake University denies that there was any discrimination against Graham, but the university’s actions seem to belie its words.

This cannot stand. We have spent the last eight years working to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and for general LGBT rights, and these victories are at risk due to the Republicans taking advantage of their victory in the 2016 elections. This woman did nothing to deserve being treated so poorly; as a matter of fact, before Graham’s forced resignation, she held a standout record as both a coach and a basketball player.

Drake University must be held accountable for its reported discrimination. It should never matter what a person’s sexual orientation is so long as they do their job competently, and Graham was more than merely competent. Sign this petition to demand the university apologize and reinstate Graham as a coach.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Martin,

Assistant basketball coach Courtney Graham was reportedly fired by your university for being gay: When the head coach and faculty met Graham’s girlfriend, they reportedly forced her to take time off and made her workdays more and more miserable until finally forcing her to resign this year. Between her coming out and her termination, Graham says she has spent two years being gossiped about, discriminated against, and basically turned into a pariah by the department solely because of her sexual orientation.

This woman does not deserve to be treated so unfairly. Graham had a reputation and a record as an excellent coach and basketball player — that should be more important than who she happens to be dating. Your university owes Graham a huge apology in addition to the offer to have her job reinstated.

Sincerely,
