Alleged Animal Abuse at Pig Farm Must Be Stopped

Target: Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, Director of USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture

Goal: Shut down unethical hog confinement facility for allegedly abusing pigs.

Pigs at a swine confinement facility are allegedly abused by the employees on a daily basis. The pigs are beaten with sharp edges of “sort boards” that are used to guide the animals, according to a former employee who was fired after reporting workers for beating pigs. He told reporters that the workers hold the boards sideways and use a chopping motion to hit the pigs. Some of them got a thrill out of doing it, the ex-employee said.

Multiple other cases of abuse have recently been reported by former employees at Cedarcrest, a 6,400 sow confinement opened by western Illinois’ leading pork producer Professional Swine Management. One man, who worked at the facility for years, says he witnessed workers beating the pigs with leather straps and boards when they wouldn’t move quickly enough. Others said that workers brutally punch, kick and strike the pigs with metal rods.

Employees from the company’s other facilities have reported similar incidents of abuse. They told Tribune reporters that they were fired or treated as pariahs if they spoke up about the abuse. Professional Swine executives wave the abuse allegations off, saying they don’t believe them. The staff of the Illinois Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare also failed to take the reports seriously. Something must be done about this alleged abuse.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Ramaswamy,

Workers at a swine facility are reportedly abusing the pigs on a daily basis. According to former employees, the pigs are kicked, punched and beaten with sharp objects for no reason.

The alleged daily abuse has been allowed to occur within Professional Swine facilities for too long. It’s time to start taking the lives and well-being of these innocent animals seriously, and stop allowing these companies to flourish while they disobey laws and violate ethics. We urge you to show zero tolerance for the infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering upon these innocent animals, and shut the facilities down once and for all, if they are found guilty of this animal abuse.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, Director of USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture-are you too busy to check this out? Need more help or is it that you just don’t care? Abuse is abuse. Pain is pain. What the f else do you need? Get off your lazy butt and do something. A five year old could do your job and probably much better. No lobbists, no peer pressure, no nothing but helping the abused animals. WTF??????

  6. A special thanks to the workers who had the decency to come forward and expose the heinous acts towards the animals.I will spread the news of abuse and boycott products associated with this location.

  7. PROFESSIONAL SWINE executives waving abuse allegations off, saying they don’t believe them and not taking anything seriously, are just covering their butts, and everyone knows it. The games that go on. See through… THANKS to the employees who spoke out, treated like pariahs or fired…typical (a confirmation).
The staff of the Illinois Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare, indulging in the old avoidance routine, we’ve seen it all before, nobody wants to rock the boat… ENOUGH. Looks like a negligent employer covering up for abusive workers and too many employees saying the same thing: that pigs are kicked, punched and beaten with sharp objects for no reason, various workers getting a perverted thrill out of it.
You know this goes on. Do the right thing. People who actually have standards are counting on it. HOPING for the best in a situation where everybody lets you down…financial/political agendas and all that.
