Shut Down Deadly Penguin Exhibit

Target: Darryl Dziadyk, Director of the Grounds and Environment at Calgary Zoo

Goal: Demand Calgary Zoo shut down its penguin exhibit.

Seven penguins at the Calgary Zoo penguin exhibit were found dead by their keeper. While official reports claim they drowned, it is believed that the true cause of their death was stress, as penguins are known to be natural swimmers. This is far from the first tragedy to occur in this exhibit. In 2013, two other penguins died of a bacterial infection and an otter drowned after becoming tangled in a garment meant to be a toy.

Zoo animals require more care than average, as not only are they the responsibility of the people in charge, but they can be prone to unhappiness and stress due to the exhibits not being their natural habitat. The penguins who allegedly succumbed to stress were clearly unhappy, and it is extremely likely that the surviving birds are not at their happiest either. The zoo is clearly not the best place for them.

The best thing for these birds is to be kept in a true sanctuary, a habitat that specializes in the care they need and knows the best ways to ensure their survival and happiness. Sign this petition to demand the penguin exhibit at the Calgary Zoo be shut down and that the penguins be taken to a proper sanctuary.

Dear Director Dziadyk,

Seven penguins were found dead at your penguin exhibit, and two died of bacterial infection two years ago. That is nine penguins total, which is far too many for a business that must be focused on the welfare of its animals above else. Worse, the seven dead penguins were said to have died due to stress, most likely from living in a habitat that is nothing like their natural home.

You owe the surviving penguins better than to risk this happening again. These animals need to be taken to a sanctuary where they can live their lives and exist as they would in the wild rather than be put on display for visitors. Please close down your penguin exhibit and have the remaining birds transferred to a sanctuary as soon as possible.

  1. Since Penguins swim more than they’re on land, its highly doubtful they drowned as was first reported.

How about UP GRADING the exhibit, testing it and the waters for bacteria, viruses, etc, and letting them stay….? Isn’t that reasonable? How many “penguin sanctuaries” are there in the world, and isn’t there a greater need for them to be used by wild penguins suffering from man made issues?
