Target: Christine Link, Executive Director of the ACLU of Ohio
Goal: Applaud the veto of the anti-reproductive rights “heartbeat bill,” which would have banned abortion after only six weeks.
A bill in Ohio dubbed the “heartbeat bill” has been vetoed by Governor John Kasich, thanks in part to petitions like this one on ForceChange. The bill would have banned abortion after just six weeks, or when a fetus’ heartbeat can supposedly be heard. Sign this petition to applaud this victory for the fight for accessible abortion and reproductive rights.
The controversial bill, which passed in the Ohio House and Senate, was added to child abuse legislation in an attempt to get it passed, despite similar laws and bills being rejected in Arkansas and North Dakota. The bill would not have made any exceptions for cases of rape or incest.
Since most women don’t realize they’re pregnant until two missed periods, or about eight weeks, the majority of women would essentially be banned from having an abortion before they even have a chance to make a choice. The ACLU of Ohio said that they would take the “unconstitutional” bill to court if it was made law.
Women have a right to make their own choices about their bodies, especially without the government making decisions for them before they even know the situation they’re in. Applaud the activists who fought this backwards bill and stood up for reproductive rights in Ohio.
Dear Mrs. Link,
I’m writing to thank you for your and the ACLU of Ohio’s work in fighting the malicious “heartbeat bill” that would have banned abortion after just six weeks, an amount of time where most women don’t even know that they’re pregnant. Taking on a massive anti-abortion governor like John Kasich is no easy task, and now women will have somewhat of a choice in what they do with their bodies.
I applaud you for standing up for reproductive rights and looking out for the women of Ohio.
