Applaud Panera Bread for Improving Chicken Welfare Policy

Target: Ron Shaich, CEO of Panera Bread

Goal: Thank Panera Bread for adopting new animal welfare policy that will create a better life for broiler chickens.

Panera Bread recently announced a new chicken welfare policy that will greatly improve the lives of broiler chickens used in its cafes. Under the new policy, Panera Bread will only use chickens raised in conditions that meet the Global Animal Partnership’s Broiler Chicken Standard. In order to meet this standard, the chickens must not be kept in crowded cages or crates, and they must be allowed outdoor access. There can also be no physical alterations of the birds, like toe or beak trimming. They also must be rendered unconscious with multi-step controlled atmospheric stunning to ensure that they feel no pain when being euthanized. Panera plans to implement the changes in all of its restaurants by 2024.

For years, Panera Bread has been working to improve the standards of animal welfare in its cafes. Panera plans to use only cage-free eggs in the United States by 2020 and in Canada by 2025. In 2016, 100 percent of the chickens and turkeys used in its salads and sandwiches were raised without antibiotics and were vegetarian fed. By continuing to raise their animal welfare standards, Panera provides a model for other restaurants across the United States.

Panera Bread is the first major U.S. fast food chain to enact these broiler chicken policies and is hoping that other restaurants will follow suit. Sign this petition to thank Panera Bread for creating a better for broiler chickens, and to encourage the company to continue working with other major restaurants to improve their animal welfare policies.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Shaich,

I’m writing to thank you for improving your animal welfare policies for broiler chickens. Your decision to only use broiler chickens that meet the Global Animal Partnership’s Broiler Chicken Standard is the right choice. As a restaurant that serves 10 million people each week, your decision has the power to make widespread changes in the restaurant industry.

Many broiler chickens spend their lives in cages the size of a piece of paper where they never see the sun. They’re genetically manipulated to grow faster and larger, often causing them to have heart attacks. When they’re killed, many are fully conscious and slaughtered in a way that does not meet federal humane slaughter standards. By refusing to work with farmers who treat their chickens inhumanely, Panera Bread is helping to show that this type of cruel farming will not be tolerated.

Thank you for your commitment to making the lives of broiler chickens better. Now, I encourage you to continue working with other restaurants to ensure that their chickens meet the GAP’s Broiler Chicken Standard.

Sincerely,

How nice is this,to sign a petition saying thank you to Panera bread for changing the way chickens are treated. We know they are killed for food but while they are alive they should be treated with respect.no animal deserves cruelty to the degree they go through.Thank you again Panera bread, hopefully more companies will start doing the same and we won’t have to keep signing endless petitions to stop this horrendous cruelty.

  2. Why give them 7+ years to fully implement this change?

7 months should suffice – worse case. If I told my mgr I’d change my process in 7 years, I’d be out the door in 7 minutes!!

Why do they get this free pass? I shudder to think of how many animals will suffer between now and 2024!

  3. This does not make a difference, there is no humane way to kill someone who does not want to die. Humane murder and humane animal ag is a lie.

    • YOU ARE SO RIGHT, IF PEOPLE STOPPED EATING CHICKENS AND DEAD ANIMALS THERE WOULD BE NO CRUELTY, I DO NOT EAT DEAD ANIMALS AND I LOVE MY FOOD AND I DONT DO HARM TO ANY LIVING ANIMAL, ANIMALS DO NOT WANT TO DIE, THEY WANT TO LIVE AND FEEL ABSOLUTE TERROR WHEN THEY ARE MURDERED, JUST STOP EATING DEAD ANIMALS IT IS NOT HARD TO DO.

  4. 7 YEARS??????????? REALLY??????? MAX 1 YEAR WILL BE MORE THEN ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!! IS IT TO LONG!!!!!!!!!! IS THIS NEXT B.S.

  5. Panera Bread, thank you so much for showing respect for these animals.
