Don’t Allow Doctors to Lie About Prenatal Problems to Prevent Abortions

Target: Kansas Speaker of the House Mike O’Neal

Goal: Stop a bill in Kansas that would make it legal for doctors to withhold information to prevent an abortion.

Kansas lawmakers have recently crafted what is being called “the most sweeping anti-abortion bill in the country” by news sources. This multifaceted bill is reminiscent of the anti-choice legislation that recently passed in Arizona; it would make it legal for doctors to withhold information from patients if they believe it could lead to an abortion.

Under the bill (HB 2958), doctors would be exempt from malpractice suits if they lie to patients about prenatal problems such as birth defects, disabilities, and even ectopic pregnancies. Conditions such as an ectopic pregnancy often require an abortion to save the life of the mother. Many women may have life-threatening conditions caused by the fetus, but they would not be aware of them if the doctor can withhold that information for personal reasons. Furthermore, women cannot sue for pregnancy-related health issues caused from this information being withheld.

This dangerous and unethical piece of legislation would increase the mortality rate of mothers and infants in the interest of personal morality. It places priority on anti-choice doctors instead of trusting patients to make informed choices regarding their bodies.

Another piece of the bill bans state employees from performing abortions, effectively causing the University of Kansas Medical Center to lose its obstetrics/gynecology accreditation. Medical students can already opt out of abortion procedure training, making this clause entirely unnecessary. It is clear that the bill is only aiming to make obtaining a safe, legal abortion even more difficult, even at the risk of a woman dying.

The passing of similar legislation in Arizona is shocking, and we can’t let these bills spread to other regions of the United States. Provisions like this put thousands of lives in jeopardy and are extremely irresponsible. Urge Speaker of the House Mike O’Neal to reject this unethical piece of legislation and protect the rights and lives of Kansas’ patients.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Rep. Mike O’Neal,

The recent legislation allowing doctors to withhold critical information from patients to prevent an abortion is unethical, irresponsible, and dangerous. Women have the right to make informed decisions regarding their bodies and their pregnancies, and provisions like this one would risk thousands of lives. Certain prenatal conditions can threaten the life of the mother, and withholding that information could cause women to die from complications. Why are we placing priority on the personal morals of doctors instead of the prenatal health of patients?

Furthermore, banning state employees from performing abortions will have a huge impact on the University of Kansas Medical Center’s accreditation. Medical students can already opt out of abortion procedure training if they disagree with it, and it is unnecessary to prevent all students from learning how to safely perform this necessary legal procedure.

Please respect the rights, health, and lives of Kansas’ patients and reject HB 2958.

Sincerely,
