Target: Texas Senator Ted Cruz
Goal: Urge Senator Cruz to abandon the First Amendment Defense Act and stop trying to legalize discrimination against LGTBQ individuals.
The First Amendment Defense Act sounds like something every freedom-loving American should applaud, but this name only thinly veils the bigotry contained within. This bill would allow businesses to refuse service to LGTBQ individuals based solely on their sexual orientation. It would also prevent the federal government from intervening to protect the constitutional rights of LGTBQ individuals in these situations.
This bill was the brainchild of Senators Tend Cruz and Mike Lee. It was quickly shot down when it was first purposed in 2015, but now with the backing of President-elect Donald Trump and a Republican-dominated House of Representatives it will likely sail through into legislation. This would be a civil rights disaster that would erase so many hard-earned LGTBQ rights.
The bill also leaves a lot of room for misinterpretation. For example, it could be used to refuse service to all unmarried couples or single mothers because it is phrased in such a way that allows people to discriminate against any sexual relationship that took place outside of traditional heterosexual marriages.
This bill effectively puts the rights of one group (those rigorously and morally opposed to LGTBQ relationships) above the rights of the LGTBQ community not to be discriminated against. To our lawmakers, it appears that the First Amendment only applies to heterosexual Christians.
Don’t let politicians destroy our constitution by passing religious laws. Sign this petition to protect LGTBQ rights by opposing the First Amendment Defense Act.
Dear Senator Cruz,
The First Amendment Defense Act is a terrible name for an act that strips so many of their rights. We urge you to stop trying to destroy the constitution by legalizing discrimination against those who have nontraditional sexual relationships. We have a secular government and constitution that forbids putting the rights of one group above the rights of another — Please don’t try to change the laws to make them enforce your religious views.
This law would allow for LGTBQ individuals to be legally and openly discriminated against. However, because of its convoluted phrasing, it could also be misinterpreted to allow citizens to discriminate against single mothers and those who have relationships outside of marriage.
Americans want to live in a free and secular country where the government is there to protect our rights, not strip us of them. We urge you to do your duty as a Senator and protect and uphold the constitution by abandoning the First Amendment Defense Act.
