Protect the Jobs of Pro-LGBTQ State Department Workers

Target: Rex Tillerson, Nominee for Secretary of State

Goal: Protect the jobs of State Department workers who hold pro-LGBTQ stances.

The Family Research Council, a conservative group which deems itself “pro-family” despite its discriminatory treatment of LGBTQ families, has issued a statement asking that nominee for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson fire, or in their words “ferret out,” pro-LGBTQ State Department employees. Anyone who has worked to promote the equal rights of the LGBTQ community would be under threat of losing their job.

The conservative group has asked Tillerson to put conservative men and women in their place, ones who will focus on what they are argue are “true international human rights like religious liberty” (ironically, this group which fights for religious liberty has endorsed a man who wishes to attack the religious liberty of Muslims).

This request is so troubling, not only because it demands that people lose their jobs for their personal beliefs, but also because this argument can be used as defense for firing members of the LGBTQ community simply for their sexuality. The Family Research Council, which is nothing more than a hate group, has no right to insert its discriminatory beliefs into politics and into the livelihoods of others. Sign the petition to demand that Rex Tillerson ignore their request and protect the jobs of the pro-LGBTQ employees. What right does the Family Research Council have to decide who can and cannot have a job?

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Tillerson,

The Family Research Council, a conservative lobbying group, has released a statement asking that you fire any pro-LGBTQ State Department workers upon commencing your position next year. They ask instead that you hire conservative men and women and “ferret out” others.

This request is so troubling because it seeks to punish people for their personal beliefs and will undoubtedly be used as a means of firing members of the LGBTQ community. This lobbying group has no right to decide who can and cannot have a job. As Secretary of State, it will be your duty to protect the American people in a variety of ways; Start by protecting those who work for you. I demand that you protect the jobs of any pro-LGBTQ State Department workers.

Sincerely,
