Commend Portland for Becoming First “Salmon Safe” City

Target: Charlie Hales, Mayor of Portland, Oregon

Goal: Applaud Portland for leading the way in restoring and preserving Pacific Northwest Salmon.

Last month, the Portland Mayor’s office announced the city had taken action all across the municipality to earn the Salmon-Safe Certification. This made the Portland the first city to receive this distinction given by Salmon Safe, one of the leading regional eco-labels. Salmon Safe has set out to recover the almost 90 percent of wild salmon that have died, through habitat restoration, protecting watersheds, as well as many other sustainable practices.

Salmon-Safe Certification means that Portland parks and other facilities passed a series of scientific evaluations based on their water and land management. It shows that the majority of practices related to water and land use function within Salmon Safe’s ideas about sustainability and healthy activities. Mayor Hayes hopes to use this as an example for other west coast cities to join the fight to save the salmon.

The safety and well-being of salmon in the Pacific Northwest is integral to our ecosystem’s ability to function properly. Salmon are a keystone species, which not only means that the other animals rely on the salmon for survival, but it also means their health as a species is a representation of how healthy the ecosystem is as a whole. PETITION LETTER

Dear Mayor Hales,

Salmon have been a staple of the Pacific Northwest for centuries. I would like to thank you for continuing the practice of protecting these all-important animals for the generations to come. The Salmon Safe Certification is clear and concrete evidence that the city is leading the fight to save the salmon and will hopefully be an inspiration to other cities in the area.

Without these animals, the way of life in this part of the country would no longer be the same. And as the world continues to grow, there are more threats facing the salmon. I hope that with your help, Salmon Safe can continue to spread this movement to other cities in the Pacific Northwest as well as all over the country. I would once again like to commend your action of helping to protect the salmon.

Sincerely,
