Stop Silencing the Media in Turkey

Target: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey

Goal: Stop preventing the media and press from doing their job and carrying out their duty to the public.

Newspapers, radio stations, and television programs are being closely monitored and controlled by the Turkish government. The government has cracked down on the freedom of the press ever since the failed coup attempt in July. Journalists have been arrested on false charges and even attacked simply for using their platform to challenge and question the government.

According to Human Rights Watch, 148 journalists are currently in jail and 169 media outlets have been shut down by the government. The government has been using its “state of emergency” to carry out such actions. Independent journalists have been labeled “terrorists” for interfering with the government, while state officials have been appointed as trustees of media outlets to keep a closer eye on the content being produced.

These restrictions prevent Turkish citizens from obtaining fair and accurate news and prevent the flow of ideas. Without the media, the government has no checks and balances. This will only allow the government to grow stronger and enact further restrictions on the media until there is no free and independent media left. Sign the petition to demand that Turkey end the restrictions it places on the media.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Erdoğan,

Nearly 150 journalists are currently imprisoned by your government and nearly 170 media outlets have been shut down. Ever since the coup, the media has been repressed. The press has been silenced and restricted from freely reporting the news. They have been threatened, fired, and even attacked for doing their job.

These actions are not only preventing the press from doing its job, they are preventing your citizens from acquiring fair and accurate news. You are robbing them of the chance to listen to differing viewpoints and opinions. If your government had nothing to hide, it would not silence the media. For the benefit of your citizens, I ask that you free the imprisoned journalists and end your restrictions on the media.

Sincerely,
