Target: Mary Fallin, Governor of Oklahoma
Goal: Reverse measure to install anti-abortion signs in all Oklahoma public restrooms.
As a part of Oklahoma’s Humanity of the Unborn Child Act, which was signed into law by the governor, all public restrooms must be posted with signs meant to steer pregnant women away from abortion in an effort to eliminate the practice from the state. This new law could potentially cost businesses millions of dollars since the government did not allocate money for the signs prior to passing the legislation, and the effort spreads religious-fueled ideas in places like public schools where that rhetoric does not belong. The text on the ads is required to encourage women to seek help from the state and include details about how a fetus grows in the womb.
Currently, only four abortion clinics exist in Oklahoma, and the state’s Supreme Court recently struck down a law that required these facilities to obtain hospital admitting privileges, which would have shut down many locations. This aggressive new law, if actually imposed, will strengthen the stigma around abortion, further shaming women who wish to seek those services. Restaurants, nursing homes, hospitals, and all public buildings inspected by the Department of Health are required to post these signs within one year’s time. Sign this petition to ask the governor to reverse this law and instead work to provide unbiased, all-encompassing information to women seeking options for their pregnancy.
Dear Governor Fallin,
Oklahoma’s law expecting all public restrooms to be plastered with anti-abortion propaganda is dishonest about the realities of pregnancy and could be damaging to society. This sort of rhetoric is fueled by Christian ideals and, therefore, does not have a place in government.
Outside of shaming pregnant women and limiting their reproductive health options, these new signs could cost businesses up to $2.3 million. It is not the state’s place to tell a woman what she should do with her body and health. I demand that you reverse the law requiring that all restrooms include ads negating abortion and instead work to supply women with accurate, unbiased information.
