Target: Yahya Jammeh, President of The Gambia
Goal: Peacefully transfer power to the new president-elect.
After conceding defeat in the recent Gambian presidential election, Yahya Jammeh has since reversed his decision to relinquish his seat without reluctance. His claims of abnormalities in the results and calls for a new election threaten his country’s chance at its first peaceful transfer of power. The Gambia elected the opposition coalition’s Adama Barrow to be their president; some voters so dedicated that they keep watch outside his home in case of attack.
Jammeh has ruled The Gambia for over 20 years, winning highly criticized elections and surviving coups, which is how he assumed power in the first place. Along with Barrow, leaders from many other West African countries are asking Jammeh to give up his position immediately. Add your voice by signing this petition demanding a peaceful transfer of power to the elected candidate.
Dear President Jammeh,
Your reign over The Gambia has been criticized by world leaders and activists, and your people have decided it is time to give someone else a chance to rule the country. Fellow West African leaders as well as President-elect Adama Barrow are demanding that you step down immediately and once again concede defeat.
Prolonging your tenure by demanding a re-election stands only to jeopardize your image and undermine the ballots cast by Gambian citizens. A peaceful transfer of power is important in keeping a country united and its residents safe. Please reconsider your accusations against the election and hand over power to the elected candidate.
