Target: John Kasich, Governor of Ohio
Goal: Veto bill that would make abortion illegal after a month and a half of pregnancy, the time it takes for most women to find out they’re pregnant.
The Ohio House and Senate have passed a bill that would ban abortion after a fetus’s heartbeat is heard, which is typically around a month and a half into a pregnancy. If this wasn’t bad enough, the bill doesn’t even make exceptions for pregnancy cases that involve rape or incest. It is up to Gov. John Kasich to stop this bill. Demand he vetoes this to protect women’s rights and prevent abortion from becoming essentially illegal.
A bill tacked on to another bill meant to tackle child abuse would make abortion illegal after an average of six weeks. Many women don’t even know that they’re pregnant until around eight weeks once they’ve missed two periods. Ohio already has a deficit of women’s clinics, making it difficult even for women who find out earlier than the “heartbeat” deadline on to get an abortion.
Janet Porter, an anti-abortion activist who also fights against LGBT rights, wrote the horrific bill. This bill attacks women by forcing those who would opt for abortion to choose unsafe, illegal options.
Reproductive rights activists say the bill is unconstitutional and believe it could be challenged because it places an undue burden on a woman’s right to an abortion, protected by Roe v. Wade. This bill must not become law. Demand Gov. Kasich veto this bill.
Dear Gov. Kasich,
A bill has come to your desk that was written by someone who is anti-choice and anti-LGBT rights. Roe v. Wade protects a woman’s rights to choose, and this bill could potentially go against that. This makes the bill unconstitutional.
This bill essentially bans abortion in any case since most women don’t even find out that they’re pregnant until the time outlined in this bill. On top of that, the bill doesn’t even protect women who are victims of rape or incest. I demand you veto this bill.
