Stop Ignoring Alleged Genocide Against Muslims by Soldiers

Target: Aung San Suu Kyi, President of Myanmar

Goal: Denounce the murder of Rohingya Muslims by the Burmese military.

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate and president of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been criticized by human rights activists for her silence on the issue of genocide, which her military is allegedly engaged in against Rohingya Muslims. Recently a small group of Rohingya attacked guards at the Bangladesh border, killing nine officers. Since then, soldiers have allegedly burned down villages, sexually assaulted women, and killed hundreds of people just to find the few responsible for the attacks. Suu Kyi’s reluctance to denounce this behavior threatens her reputation as a proponent for peace and human rights, and it fuels hatred towards Muslims.

Rohingya Muslims are considered the most prosecuted peoples in the world. Though they have resided in Myanmar, formerly Burma, for generations, they have been denied citizenship and treated like immigrants. Hundreds have fled to nearby Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Thailand to escape the force being used against them.

The Burmese military has denied allegations of rape and claimed that Muslims are burning down their own buildings. Human Rights Watch has accused Burma of ethnic cleansing, which should be unacceptable in a country run by one of the most peaceful women in the world. Demand that Suu Kyi speak up for the residents of Myanmar and denounce the genocide her military is doing against Rohingya Muslims.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Suu Kyi,

Mass murder against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is causing many to flee their homes at a time when there is already an international refugee crisis. The world once viewed you as an advocate for human rights, but your refusal to speak out against the allegedly excessive violence being used by your military taints your reputation and that of Burma.

Muslims across the world are facing hate crimes on a massive scale, and what your soldiers are doing to the Rohingya only empowers international prejudice against them. By punishing all Muslims, you let a small group of rebels represent the entire group. I urge you to denounce the murders caused by your military and try to put a stop to genocide in Burma.

Sincerely,
