Stop Needless Killing of Mountain Lions and Black Bears

Target: James C. Pribyl, Chair of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission

Goal: Reject predator management plan that proposes killing mountain lions and black bears.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department is considering implementing a predator management plan that proposes killing black bears and mountain lions in the Piceance Basin over a three-year period. This plan is supposed to help increase the Piceance Basin’s mule deer population. However, the plan ignores what’s truly causing the decline in mule deer: oil and gas drilling that has created rampant habitat degradation and depleted food sources.

There are many effective ways that the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department could increase the mule deer population without killing mountain lions and black bears. They can limit oil and gas drilling in the Piceance Basin. They can also manage winter range and control invasive weeds to ensure that the deer have enough food. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department has many options for bringing back the deer population, all of which are more effective than killing predators.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department is blaming predators for the mule deer’s decline, but all signs point to it being the oil and gas industry who are the true culprits. Sign this petition to tell the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission to reject the predator management plan that will result in the needless deaths of black bears and mountain lions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Pribyl,

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s proposed predator management plan will result in the unnecessary deaths of mountain lions and black bears. This plan is supposed to help bring back the declining mule deer population, but scientists say that it’s not the predator population that’s the cause of this population decline. The most likely reason for the mule deer population decline is the rampant oil and gas drilling in the Piceance Basin. This drilling has caused habitat degradation, and it has also depleted vital food sources for the deer.

For the good of the native black bears and mountain lions in the Piceance Basin, I urge you to reject this plan. Please do not pass a plan that promotes the needless killing of black bears and mountain lions. Instead, focus on addressing the rampant habitat loss the mule deer are facing due to oil and gas drilling.

Sincerely,
