Justice for Bullying Victim Driven to Suicide

Target: Robert Burby, Texas City Chief of Police

Goal: Justice for teen who killed herself, apparently due to social media bullying.

Eighteen-year-old Brandy Vela fatally shot herself in front of her entire family after months of bullying on social media. The girl had been bullied for years about her weight, but the last straw came when other students forged online sex profiles in her name, leading to sexually harassing phone calls that forced the girl to change her number. The police were unable to put a stop to this, but are currently investigating the suicide as a cyber-bullying crime.

The culprits, whoever they may be, must not go unpunished for what they have caused. Too many teenagers have committed suicide due to vicious online and offline bullying in the past decade, and the number is still going up. Bullying in many forms has been outlawed, but the problem has diminished very little. Brandy Vela is just another poor, unfortunate life snuffed out by the horrors of modern bullying and cruelty.

This poor girl deserves justice, and so does her grieving family. They were powerless to stop her suicide, but they deserve the peace of mind in knowing that their daughter’s tormenters will be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Sign this petition to demand the police department find and apprehend the culprits as soon as possible.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Burby,

An 18-year-old girl has killed herself due to vicious online bullying in which other students forged sex-soliciting profiles in her name on social media. She received many harassing calls and was forced to change her number, and the bullying persisted until she lost all hope and committed suicide in front of her horrified family. This is just one more stone in the already overflowing bucket of bullying-related suicides and deaths.

You must do everything in your power to find the culprits quickly and apprehend them. They cannot be allowed to get away with what they have caused. This poor, innocent girl and her grieving family deserve justice, and you must deliver it as soon as possible. Online bullying is a disgusting trend that must be ended, and by apprehending and prosecuting the culprits in Brandy Vela’s suicide, you can help to create an example of why bullying via social media is not acceptable.

Sincerely,
