Don’t Put Pipeline Protestors at Risk While Allowing Police to Remain Violent

Target: Jack Dalrymple, North Dakota Governor

Goal: Lift the questionably motivated cold weather evacuation of the area where protestors are gathered to challenge the Dakota Access Pipeline.

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple has ordered an evacuation due to cold weather in the area where protestors are gathered to fight the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline, meaning protestors could be arrested for trespassing. Demand the governor lift this evacuation so that protestors are not arrested for trespassing while violent officers who gave protestors hypothermia walk free.

Many activists are questioning Gov. Dalrymple’s motives to issue an evacuation order that could end up negatively impacting protestors because the governor took no action against police officers who recently shot water cannons at protestors in this same cold weather.

While the evacuation order does not explicitly state that it will force protestors out, it does say that advocating for people to enter or stay in the area could be served with a punishment and protestors could be arrested for trespassing. It also means that state agencies don’t have to provide services in the area.

It’s ridiculous that the governor is taking this action against protestors under the guise of protecting them when it will really create an increased risk for dangerous circumstances and increased chances of clashes with police. The governor did nothing about police officers who shot water cannons at these protestors in the same cold weather. Demand the governor lift this ban so that the protestors are not faced with trespassing during cold weather while officers are allowed to give them hypothermia in cold weather.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Gov. Dalrymple,

The evacuation order you recently gave would seem normal and just under other circumstances. However, you allowed police officers to go unpunished after shooting protestors with water cannons in freezing cold weather. Allowing that while banning protestors from an area due to cold weather doesn’t add up.

You can’t pick and choose when you want to protect protestors from cold weather and when they should have to deal with it, especially alongside violent conditions like being sprayed with water cannons. Lift the order so that protestors are not unjustly deterred and faced with arrest for trespassing.

Sincerely,
