Target: Barack Obama, United States President
Goal: Protect freedom of the press and the First Amendment.
President-elect Donald Trump has made many angry comments towards the media, making his opposition to the press one of the cornerstones of his campaign. He has denounced reporters and the press as dishonest scum, and his supporters have lashed out angrily on and offline at any reporters who dared to criticize Trump or point out any of his flaws. Now that Trump has won the electoral vote, he intends to make it the law that any journalist who writes “libel” can and will be sued. It is clear that he intends to punish the press for daring to speak their minds and issue any comments about him that are not glowing praise.
Freedom of speech is the first and most important amendment of the Constitution. For years, the Supreme Court has done everything in its power to protect the press, but now that there is a vacancy, things could change for the worse. Donald Trump has already announced his plans to build his cabinet of ultra-conservative, misogynist racists, and he could very easily try to place someone on the Supreme Court who would make a mockery of the First Amendment. Even if the Supreme Court continues to back the press, Trump will still try to do everything in his power to attack them with lawsuits and angry Twitter messages.
We cannot allow this to happen under any circumstances. Whether Trump goes through with the lawsuits or not, his cruel words and his supporters’ vicious attacks on the press cannot continue. Sign this petition to demand extra protection of journalists and the press in general.
Dear President Obama,
Donald Trump has made his hatred of the press and the news media very well-known, to the point of wanting to curtail their freedom of speech once he is in office. His supporters have backed up and encouraged this hatred, attacking and jeering at reporters and journalists who dare to criticize Trump or point out any of his flaws. For decades, the Supreme Court has worked hard to protect the press and the First Amendment, and Trump’s ire could put that in jeopardy should he fill the empty space with someone who supports his ideology.
It is up to you to ensure the strongest protection of the press from Trump while you still have this power. Even if he cannot destroy the First Amendment, he will fight them with angry words and allow his followers to sling hatred and cruelty at all journalists and reporters who dare speak their minds. Not only is that a violation of the First Amendment, but it is a violation of basic human rights. Please strengthen the First Amendment and all laws protecting the press.
