Praise Animal Cruelty Charges Against Amusement Park

Target: Kate MacDonald, Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Goal: Praise charges laid against amusement park for the alleged neglect and abuse of animals.

Animal cruelty charges have been laid against Marineland, an animal park in Niagra Falls, Ontario, for alleged neglect and mistreatment of animals. Charges include one count of permitting a peacock to be in distress, one charge of failing to comply with the prescribed standards of care for a peacock, one count for failing to comply with the prescribed standards of care for black bears, and two counts of failing to comply with the prescribed standards of care for guinea hens. According to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), further charges may still be laid.

Animal welfare officials entered the park to investigate claims of neglect made by a former animal care worker. They reportedly found a peacock with an infected eye and bears left with inadequate food and water. Marineland refutes the charges, saying that the peacock was receiving veterinary treatment and the only reason for the citation about the bears’ food was that there were labels inadvertently left on some of the produce.

This is not the first time the amusement park has been investigated under suspicion of animal cruelty. In 2012, the OSPCA responded to allegations of animal abuse at the park, issuing several correction demands, though not pressing any charges. Throughout the years, several beluga and killer whales have died on the premises from conditions ranging from meningitis to twisted intestines.

Amusement parks like these often place profit above the welfare of animals. Keeping wild animals in captivity is cruel, and can lead to myriad mental and physical health issues. If convicted, Marineland could be banned from owning animals and slapped with a $60,000 fine. Sign the petition below to thank the OSPCA for taking a stand against the abuse of captive animals.

Dear Ms. MacDonald,

Five charges were recently laid against Marineland for the alleged neglect and mistreatment of peacocks, black bears, and guineafowl. The charges allege that the animals were receiving inadequate veterinary care, food, and water.

Parks like Marineland place profit over the health and well-being of their animals. We, the undersigned, thank you for stepping up to ensure the welfare of all animals kept in the park and ask you to seek the maximum possible punishment in this case.
