Target: Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, President of Egypt
Goal: Protect human rights activists from Egypt’s authoritarian government.
Human rights activists throughout Egypt are finding that their own rights are slowly being stripped away. Several have recently been prevented from traveling or leaving the country. They have not committed any crimes, yet they are being treated as if they had. The human rights activists believe the government is trying to silence their protests and prevent them from voicing criticism to other countries.
Banning travel may only be the beginning of a series of dangerous and disturbing human rights violations. The Egyptian government is already planning on bringing civil rights organizations under control of “the state.” This would require government permission for all activities and severe jail time for activists who do not follow this regulation.
The human rights activists, advocating for causes such as democracy and women’s rights, should be protected. Instead, they are being gradually silenced and threatened. Sign the petition and demand that the human rights activists and their own rights be protected.
Dear President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi,
New reports out of your country have indicated that human rights activists are being mistreated at the hands of your own government. They have been banned from leaving the country and new legislation will put their organizations, advocating for everything from democracy to women’s rights, under the control of your government.
These measures only silence the activists, who are working to protect your citizens. I demand that you protect those striving for improved human rights, instead of punishing, attacking, and threatening them. Doing so only further supports their beliefs that your nation is one that violates human rights.
