Severely Punish Hoarder of 126 Sick and Injured Rabbits

Target: Erix Gonzalez, District Attorney, Brooklyn, New York

Goal: Demand maximum punishment for woman found guilty of hoarding over 100 sick and neglected rabbits.

A woman has been found guilty of animal cruelty after authorities removed over 100 sick and neglected rabbits from her property. The rabbits were living in squalid conditions, with only grey dirt pastures and no grass to graze in. She has been convicted of 125 counts of “overdriving and torturing” an animal, one count for each rabbit found.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) staff found the rabbits in poor condition, some with patchy hair, others with abscesses, skin inflammation, fever or lameness. Around two thirds of the animals had injuries such as bite wounds, likely from fighting with each other. Over a quarter of the animals had suffered genital or anal trauma, and nearly half tested positive for syphilis.

Owner Dorota Trec could face up to two years in jail for her crimes. She will also be made to foot the bill for the care of the rabbits, which was provided by the ASPCA. According to reports, she could be on the hook for up to $50,000 in care costs. She will also be made to surrender the 90 rabbits that remain on her property to the ASPCA.

With so many animals on one property, it is impossible to properly provide food and veterinary care for each one. The fact that many of the animals showed visible signs of injury and illness demonstrates intentional neglect on the part of the owner. Sign the petition below to praise the guilty verdict and ask the prosecutor to seek the maximum penalty in this case.

Dear Mr. Gonzalez,

A woman was recently found guilty of over 100 counts of animal cruelty after authorities removed 126 sick, injured, and neglected rabbits from her property. The rabbits suffered bite wounds, bald patches, abscesses, and skin inflammation. Some showed signs of genital and anal trauma while around half the rabbits tested positive for syphilis. The rabbits were kept in poor conditions without any grass to graze on.

These animals suffered extreme neglect at the hands of their owner, who deliberately ignored signs of injury and distress. In order to protect other animals from similar fates, it is imperative that she is appropriately punished and banned from animal ownership in the future. We, the undersigned, ask that you do everything within your power to ensure that she receives the maximum possible punishment.
