Target: Donald Trump, President-elect of the United States
Goal: Demand that the president-elect respect and honor the tradition of the presidential press pool.
Less than a week into his time as president-elect, Donald Trump lied to the presidential press pool for seemingly no reason. Instead of being truthful that he was going out to a lavish dinner, Trump lied. In doing so, Trump is showing a lack of regard for the tradition of the presidential press pool, which has existed for over 70 years and upholds the First Amendment to the Constituion.
The goal of the press pool is not to be invasive to the first family. Instead, it is supposed to act as a check on the president. The American public has a right to know how, when, and where the president spends his time. They have a right to know who the president talks to and what he says. This openness is supposed to prevent corruption. The people have a right to be informed.
This is especially true given that Trump has been courting international real estate developers in the last few days and took his daughter Ivanka to high level political meetings. He has already begun blurring the lines between his service to the country and his drive to profit off the country.
Transparency and truthful reporting is more important than ever. The Republican-led government is appeasing the controversial president-elect. With no other checks on his power, all that is left are the press and the people. However, Trump made this check impossible. Trump has made it perfectly clear as to why a press must always be in the presence of the president-elect. The press must be able to report on such conflicts of interest and corruption when they occur. Sign the petition to demand that the president-elect respect the tradition of the press pool.
Dear Mr. Trump,
Throughout your campaign, you have shown unwarranted scorn toward the press. This is highly problematic. You broke a decades-old tradition. The press pool is supposed to serve as a checks-and-balance system for the American people, who have a right to know what their elected leader is doing at all times.
This is to prevent corruption or special interests. Only a week into your time as president-elect, you have once again shown why you cannot be trusted to hold the highest office in the land. If you wish to hold the people’s trust, you must honor the tradition of your press pool so that you can’t use your office for corruption and self-enrichment.
