President-Elect Must Respect the Presidential Press Pool

Target: Donald Trump, President-elect of the United States

Goal: Demand that the president-elect respect and honor the tradition of the presidential press pool.

Less than a week into his time as president-elect, Donald Trump lied to the presidential press pool for seemingly no reason. Instead of being truthful that he was going out to a lavish dinner, Trump lied. In doing so, Trump is showing a lack of regard for the tradition of the presidential press pool, which has existed for over 70 years and upholds the First Amendment to the Constituion.

The goal of the press pool is not to be invasive to the first family. Instead, it is supposed to act as a check on the president. The American public has a right to know how, when, and where the president spends his time. They have a right to know who the president talks to and what he says. This openness is supposed to prevent corruption. The people have a right to be informed.

This is especially true given that Trump has been courting international real estate developers in the last few days and took his daughter Ivanka to high level political meetings. He has already begun blurring the lines between his service to the country and his drive to profit off the country.

Transparency and truthful reporting is more important than ever. The Republican-led government is appeasing the controversial president-elect. With no other checks on his power, all that is left are the press and the people. However, Trump made this check impossible. Trump has made it perfectly clear as to why a press must always be in the presence of the president-elect. The press must be able to report on such conflicts of interest and corruption when they occur. Sign the petition to demand that the president-elect respect the tradition of the press pool.

Dear Mr. Trump,

Throughout your campaign, you have shown unwarranted scorn toward the press. This is highly problematic. You broke a decades-old tradition. The press pool is supposed to serve as a checks-and-balance system for the American people, who have a right to know what their elected leader is doing at all times.

This is to prevent corruption or special interests. Only a week into your time as president-elect, you have once again shown why you cannot be trusted to hold the highest office in the land. If you wish to hold the people’s trust, you must honor the tradition of your press pool so that you can’t use your office for corruption and self-enrichment.

  1. That hunk of garbage doesn’t respect anything but himself. Ugh!

  2. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

you don’t know anything about politics do u? then you shouldnt have been president!

  3. Trump is the anti christ!
He knows nothing about politics, that is why he takes his air headed daughter around with him. Guess he figures with the two of them they should be able to figure out halfway what is going on and what they are doing.
He is ignorant as shit, he is racist, bigoted, and needs some severe mental help.
He will do nothing but, drive our country completely into the ground and bankrupt it beyond repair.

  4. This article is a complete lie. The press is not in place to “provide a check on the President” that is what Congress and the Supreme Court are for. You show me a real source that shows a constitutional right that the press pool serve as the check and balance on what an elected leader is doing at all times. Why don’t we get reports on our Governors, Senators, Congressmen, Mayors, City Councelmen? They are elected leaders.

I think your petition is full of crap and has no basis of truth or logical thinking whatsoever. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

But if you show me that I am wrong, I will sign your petition.
