Target: Susana Malcorra, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Culture of Argentina
Goal: Secure the release of Milagro Sala, who is being arbitrarily detained for months for protesting.
In Argentina, social activist and advocate for indigenous rights Milagro Sala has been held in detention for several months. Sala was initially arrested while protesting outside of the offices of the governor of Jujuy province following a complaint by governor Gerardo Morales. Since her initial detention, various consecutive charges have been filed against her allegedly to keep her indefinitely detained.
The U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention recently ruled her detention as arbitrary and has stated that there were no legal principles to support her continued detention. However, the Argentine Secretary of Human Rights declared that the ruling was non-binding and Governor Morales has refused to release Milagro Sala. Sign our petition to demand the government of the Argentine Republic immediately release Milagro Sala and drop all charges without legal basis.
Dear Minister Malcorra,
I was disturbed to read the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention report on the continued detention of Milagro Sala. As you may know, the Working Group found there was no legal justification for her continued detention and that the consecutive charges filed against her seem to have been motivated by a desire to keep her detained.
The continued detention of Milagro Sala undermines the work the Argentine government has done in the past decades to improve human rights. The use of indefinite detention to silence dissenting voices should not be tolerated. Given the lack of cooperation by either the Secretary of Human Rights or Governor Morales, I urge you to do everything in your power to ensure Milagro Sala’s release.
