Target: Senator Robert M. Tomlinson, Chair of the Pennsylvania Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee
Goal: End harmful sexual orientation conversion therapy for Pennsylvania’s youth.
In 2013, Senator Anthony Williams of Pennsylvania introduced a bill to the state’s senate that would ban conversion therapy, or any other means of attempting to change sexual orientation, for juveniles. However, the bill has stalled in the Republican-led Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee for over a year.
Conversion therapy has been proven to not have any effect on one’s sexual orientation. In fact, it has proven to be both inhumane and harmful. It is a barbaric practice that has been discredited by scientists, researchers, and doctors. Five states have banned conversion therapy. Seattle and Washington, D.C. have also banned the practice.
It is time for Pennsylvania to do the same, especially since Mike Pence is vice president-elect. Mike Pence supports conversion therapy and ignores scientific and human rights research that opposes it. If enough states can ban the practice, it will be damaging to any chance Pence may try and seize to implement the practice in the federal government. The LGBTQ community of Pennsylvania has waited too long for this practice to be outlawed. Sign the petition to demand that the bill move forward in the state senate.
Dear Senator Tomlinson,
About a year ago, a senate bill reached your committee that would ban sexual orientation conversion therapy for youths. A majority of researchers, scientists, and doctors agree that the so-called treatment is actually severely harmful. Yet many in your party, as they do with other issues, ignore the facts.
Other states are beginning to ban conversion therapy and the issue has become urgent since a conversion therapy supporter is only weeks away from becoming vice president. The LGBTQ community does not deserve to live in fear. I demand that you stop using their rights as a means for your political gains. Stop stalling the bill Senator Anthony Williams proposed two years ago.
