Reinstate Ban on Cruel Traps

Target: David Chanda, Director of New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife

Goal: Reinstate the ban on foothold traps in New Jersey.

After a 30-year-long ban on steel foothold traps, New Jersey has made the cruel tools legal again. Foothold traps work by having an animal put its paw inside to grab the bait, then as the bait is pulled the trap slams down onto the animal’s paw. The trap does not kill the animal, but instead lets them suffer until they are found.

The reason for the lift is reportedly in an effort to control rabies. Foothold traps are designed to target raccoons, however, other animals including opossums, skunks and even cats, could become trapped by this tool. For years, New Jersey has successfully been able to control rabies without the use of this trap.

Sign this petition and demand New Jersey reinstate the ban on this cruel tool. Foothold traps are banned in over 100 other countries, and nearly 70 percent of New Jersey voters believe the trap is inhumane. It is time to get rid of this cruel trap for good.

Dear Mr. Chanda,

New Jersey recently lifted the ban on steel foothold traps and made the cruel tools legal again after 30 years. Foothold traps are small, steel cylinders that slam down on the animal’s paw when the bait is pulled. The traps are not typically deadly, but extremely painful.

Once the animal is trapped, they cannot escape and must suffer until found. It is common to find bitten off limbs left in the traps as animals become desperate to escape the torture.

The supposed reason for this lift is an effort to control rabies since the traps gear towards raccoons. However, the state has successfully controlled rabies without the use of this tool for the last 30 years.

Please consider banning this inhumane trap again. Over 100 other countries have banned foothold traps and 69 percent of New Jersey voters believe this trap is inhumane. Please listen to your people and make the compassionate choice when it comes to steel foothold traps.

  1. anybody caught using a trap like this should be shot on sight. there is something incredibly wrong with someone who can set one of these and walk away. go home and sleep at night!! and anybody who allows them to be legal is just as bad!

  3. Gerard FABIANO says:

  4. Why New jersey made these legal ever, I struggle to understand. But to ban them for 30 years and now to re-instate their use is beyond my understanding. Please listen to the 69% who find them inhumane. These traps are disgusting.
