Target: Vladimir Putin, President of Russia
Goal: Swiftly bring to Justice the person who brutally hacked to death a transgender Muslim woman.
Just days after her wedding, Raina Aliev was viciously hacked to pieces. The 25-year-old Chechen woman had become estranged from her family after undergoing a sex change. She and her husband were both from traditionally Muslim parts of Russia.
Her death came after her father allegedly invited people to take his child’s life. According to the Mirror Aliev’s father had told a TV station, “Let him be killed, I don’t want to see him. Bring him here and kill him in front of my eyes.” He reportedly refused to use pronouns associated with her gender change. Not long after this chilling threat from her father, the young woman was found in pieces.
She had changed her sex so that she would be free to marry the man that she loved. It was too hard to live in such a traditional place with a different sexual orientation. The police had warned her about the threats against her life, but it was not enough to protect her from the horrible act of hatred that took her life.
Russia has long been openly hostile towards the LGBTQ community, but it is time for the country to fight to protect these marginalized communities so others don’t face a similar fate to Raina Aliev. Sign this petition to urge the government to do more to protect LGBTQ rights and to quickly find and punish the coward that took this woman’s life.
Dear President Putin,
Russia has long been openly hostile towards the LGBTQ community, but it is time for the country to fight to protect these marginalized communities. Recently, Raina Aliev, a transgender Muslim woman, was hacked to death just days after her wedding. The police were aware of the many public death threats she received, but she was still cut to pieces.
The government must do more to crack down on hate crimes committed towards LGBTQ individuals. Aliev’s father had reportedly told a TV station, “Let him be killed, I don’t want to see him. Bring him here and kill him in front of my eyes.” This public threat tragically ended in her death. His threat should have been met with the full force of the law, perhaps, then, she would still be alive.
Russia is a naturally rich and culturally diverse country, but it is stuck in traditionalistic thinking. It is time for the country to modernize and embrace its LGBTQ citizens. I urge you to find and punish this woman’s killer and to create a safer place for citizens of all sexual orientations.
