Target: Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago
Goal: Return $50,000 campaign donation from Donald Trump.
In retaliation to Donald Trump’s negative comments about Chicago and immigration, an alderman for the city has pledged to return his campaign donation from Trump and is calling on the mayor, Rahm Emanuel, to do the same. A $50,000 donation was made in 2010 when Emanuel was running for his current office and is the largest endorsement Trump has ever given to an Illinois candidate. Returning the money would show that Emanuel has cut ties with this man, and it would send the message that Trump’s money has no place in Chicago.
Alderman Brendan Reilly led the call for Emanuel to return the donation as well as the initiative to remove the Trump Plaza street sign from a downtown corner, which was cleared by vote. There had been two signs, but the other was stolen. Officials hope to melt down the placard and use it for someone or something more deserving of honor.
The decision to remove the sign came after the most recent rude remarks the presidential candidate made about the city. At the third debate, Trump claimed that Chicago has the toughest gun laws (which isn’t true) and that yet it has more gun violence. He neglected to take into account that there are other reasons for this level of crime. Chicago police claim that 60 percent of guns actually come from nearby states with more lax gun laws.
Emanuel’s campaign said he will not be returning the money because it was donated so long ago and they do not want to put money back into Trump’s pocket. While this is a sizeable amount of money, it does not compare to the millions Trump already possesses and receives. Returning the money would do more good because it would send a message to the citizens of the city and the Unites States as a whole that Chicago does not take money from misogynistic racists. Sign this petition to demand that Emanuel return the $50,000 campaign donation he received from Trump.
Dear Mayor Emanuel,
Alderman Reilly has taken a firm stance against Trump, and I am writing to encourage you to do the same. While removing the small street sign that honors this deplorable presidential candidate is commendable, you could do more by returning the donation this man made to your campaign. Reilly has pledged to return his Trump donation, ultimately refusing the man’s endorsement, yet you have decided to retain his financial support.
Among the awful things Trump has said about women and minorities, he has attempted to portray Chicago as a failed example of gun control and blamed strict laws for this tragic problem plaguing the city. More than anyone, you are supposed to be a champion for Chicago, yet you are continuing to allow Trump to have ties with your campaign. I ask that you follow in Reilly’s footsteps and return the donation you received from Trump in order to negate his endorsement.
