Target: New York City Council
Demand: Ban exotic animals from appearing in circuses in New York City.
The New York City Council is currently considering a bill that would ban exotic animals from appearing in circuses and other entertainment events in New York’s five boroughs. The bill is facing fierce opposition from major circuses like UniverSoul and Ringling Brothers, who threaten to stop bringing their show to New York City if the bill is passed. These circuses claim that the bill is designed to put circuses out of business, when in reality it is just stopping the cruel treatment of animals.
Circuses have a documented history of animal abuse, and even today, painful bull-hooks are used to control animals during training. There have also been a number of well-publicized animal deaths and injuries in recent years, including an alarming number of elephant deaths at Ringling Brothers. After immense pressure from the public, Ringling Brothers decided to retire its elephants earlier this year. But their other animals still remain trapped in the cruel circus life.
Because New York City is one of the circus’s major markets, passing this bill could be a turning point in the fight against animal abuse in circuses. Stand up for the lions, tigers, monkeys, and camels that are forced to perform unnatural acts under the threat of abuse. Sign our petition and tell the New York City Council that you do not support circuses that use exotic animals in inhumane ways.
Dear New York City Council:
Intro 1233, the bill banning exotic animals from appearing in circuses and other entertainment events, should be passed. This bill will allow animals to stop performing unnatural acts under the threat of abuse from their trainers. With this bill, animals will be able to live out their lives in sanctuaries where they are able to follow their natural instincts.
For decades, circus animals have been kept in small cages and paraded around the country to perform tricks that are unnatural and degrading. To control the animals, trainers use intimidation techniques, bull-hooks, prods, and other harmful devices. Now, you have the chance to change this and create a better life for these abused animals.
I urge you to tell the circuses that you will not stand for the abuse and cruelty they show to their animals. Please pass this bill and show that New York City wants a better life for the wild animals forced to appear in circuses.
