Target: Greenville Mississippi Police Chief Delando Wilson

Goal: Find and bring to justice the criminals who set a church on fire and left the message “Vote Trump” on the outer wall.

With only a week left in the campaign, a black church was set on fire and the outside wall was smeared with the ominous graffiti message “Vote Trump.” With all of the bigoted language used by Trump, it is no surprise that the Trump campaign is unpopular with African American voters. This despicable act aimed at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, a 110-year-old historically black church, is obviously a way of intimidating black voters in Greenville, Mississippi.

Fortunately, no one was inside the church when the arson is suspected to have occurred, but the building suffered significant damage that will be costly to repair. The fear that these kinds of crimes create is less easy to repair than the charred inside of this place of worship.

It is unclear if the attackers knew that the building was empty when they committed the hate crime. Even if they believed it to be empty, it would be difficult to be certain that none of the more than 200 church members were inside.

This kind of threatening behavior cannot be allowed to happen in democratic communities. People should feel safe when casting a ballot for their chosen representatives. The police must swiftly find and punish the perpetrators of this crime to ensure that the community feels safe from people who would seek to control them using fear. Sign this petition to urge the Greenville police to quickly find and punish those who committed this crime.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Wilson,

The ugly attack on Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, a 110-year-old historically black church, was a cowardly act. This hate crime was meant to intimidate the black community, and prevent them from exercising their constitutional right to vote. The criminals that committed this crime must be found and brought to justice as speedily as possible.

The church has over 200 members that now have nowhere to congregate. The property damage done to the building will be costly to repair. The hatred behind the words “Vote Trump” will be remembered long after they have been scrubbed clean.

There is too much racially motivated violence and hatred in our communities. This crime cannot go unpunished. I urge you to use every resource at your disposal to apprehend these despicable criminals.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
