Success: Online Information Protected from Greedy Corporations

Target: Tom Wheeler, Chairman, Federal Communications Commission

Goal: Applaud decision to protect users’ internet information from service providers and advertisers.

Federal officials have ruled in favor of protecting online privacy in a landmark victory for personal privacy advocates. The ruling strictly limits the ability of internet providers to use and sell customer data, which allows customers the right to control and protect their personal information.

The recent ruling will enact sweeping changes to be enforced by the Federal Communications Commission. Under these new regulations, consumers now have the right to forbid Internet providers from sharing browsing and personal information. The ruling protects almost everything related to the internet, such as app purchases, mobile locations, and browsing histories.

In recent years, targeted advertising has increasingly threatened online privacy. In an attempt to reach potential customers, providers and advertisers have taken to using a person’s internet history and other personal information to determine his or her interests, and then display relevant advertisements. Privacy advocates have long decried these practices as invasive and unethical, and the ForceChange petitions found here and here illustrate the struggle to keep personal information safe.

This ruling ensures that private information will not be bought and sold freely. Sign the petition below to thank the FCC for this important decision.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Wheeler,

I am writing to applaud your department’s recent decision to prevent internet providers from selling personal information. The practice of targeted advertising represents a serious threat to online privacy, and your ruling will go a long way in curbing this unethical practice.

For too long, companies have abused user confidence and treated privacy as a commodity to be exchanged for profit. By limiting the ability to track and share such data, you have a scored a major victory for privacy across the globe.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
