Justice For Native American Mother Shot Dead in Her Home

police-line-by-dodgertonskillhause

Target: John Urquhart, King County, Washington Sheriff

Goal: Open an independent and transparent investigation into the killing a pregnant mother in her own home.

Single mother Renee Davis was allegedly shot dead at her home on the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation by deputies with the King County Sheriff Department. Davis was the mother to three children and was five months pregnant at the time. Deputies arrived at her home to perform a ‘wellness check’ after receiving reports that she was suicidal. However, after no-one answered the door, they reportedly entered the house. It is unclear what exactly occurred inside the house, but it resulted in the deputies allegedly shooting and killing Ms. Davis. Two of her three children were in the house at the time.

Ms. Davis, who was described as Native American by relatives, had struggled with depression. She had a conversation via text with a friend concerning her ongoing struggle with depression the previous evening, which resulted in her friend requesting that local authorities check on her. Her children have been placed in protective custody.

Deputies with the King County Sheriff’s Department allegedly do not receive additional training to help to de-escalate the situation or handle mental health emergencies. If they had received training, Renee Davis’ death might have been avoided. Sign our petition to demand an independent and transparent investigation of the killing of Renee Davis and that King County law enforcement officers receive training on handling mental health crises.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheriff Urquhart,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the alleged killing of Renee Davis at her home in the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation. As you know, the deputies reportedly responsible for shooting and killing her had gone to her residence to check on her well-being. In this, they clearly failed. People experiencing mental health emergencies need help, but in numerous cases law enforcement responses have resulted in their deaths. Yet, after each death, little is done to prevent the next.

I urge you to ensure that officers of the King County Sheriff’s Department undergo training in de-escalation and handling mental health crises. Additionally, we urge you to retain the services of mental health professionals to oversee attempts to check the well being of persons with histories of mental illnesses. Lastly, I urge you to invite another agency to conduct a full, transparent, and independent investigation into this killing to ensure no conflict of interest regarding the investigation’s findings.

Sincerely,
