Target: Luis María Aguilar Morales, Mexican Supreme Court President
Goal: Demand 13-year-old rape survivor be allowed an abortion.
A young girl in Mexico has been denied the right to an abortion despite Mexican law stating that abortion is legal should a woman become pregnant via rape. This is due to the authorities reportedly refusing to consider the assault on this girl by a family acquaintance rape, instead only charging the man for “illegal sex with a minor.” Citlali, the survivor in question, will be forced to carry the baby to term even after all she has suffered because the authorities saw fit to manipulate the law to their own liking.
This is completely unjust and unfair to this poor girl. She is only 13 years old and has been traumatized enough by her assault. We cannot allow the law to further her pain by forcing her to give birth under these circumstances. Furthermore, it is unethical to manipulate a law set in place; the experts have clearly deemed Citlali’s assault a rape, in which case she is perfectly allowed to abort the pregnancy. While her rapist is being punished, he is being punished for the wrong crime; he did not just have sex with a minor, he raped her and forced her to carry his child.
The authorities need to correct this cruel decision. Sign this petition to demand they legally recognize Citlali’s assault as rape and allow her to abort her pregnancy.
Dear President Morales,
A 13-year-old girl named Citlali was raped and impregnated by an older man, and in cases of rape a woman is allowed to seek an abortion. However, the authorities have reportedly refused her this right by not declaring her assault an official rape and are only punishing her assailant for having sex with a minor. This can be seen as an unethical manipulation of the law on their part.
This is not fair to the poor girl who has suffered so greatly. She should not be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term and to become a mother to a child when she is just a child herself. Please do not put Citlali through further pain and trauma. Your legal authorities must recognize her assault as rape and allow her to end her pregnancy.
