Applaud Art Campaign to Spark Awareness of Endangered Species

Goal: Thank company for commissioning artwork that inspires people to think creatively about animal conservation and commemorate animals that have already gone extinct.

In an effort to raise awareness and funding for animal conservation, a travel company recently commissioned six vintage-style travel posters that beckon travelers to visit animals that have already gone extinct. Beyond having a hip retro design, the posters have started a conversation about currently endangered animals that are used to draw tourists to destinations. The exhibit is called “Unknown Tourism” and it was illustrated by Jon Barmby and the brainchild of Matt Lindly.

This art series has many people thinking about other animals that might soon be too late to see in the wild. Wild animals frequently bring tourists flocking to exotic destinations like India to see the Bengal tiger or the Galapagos Islands to see the Galapagos penguin. These destinations may lose their appeal if the critically endangered Bengal tiger and Galapagos penguin populations are not successfully restored.

These posters are also a great way to remember animals that would have otherwise been forgotten, such as the Jamaican giant galliwasp, which was once an interesting attraction on the island because it was an unusually large reptile. Unfortunately, this animal died out due to the rise of invasive species when the area was taken over by settlers. A very similar situation is currently happening in Hawaii. Invasive species are decimating the populations of species that are native to the island. Another animal highlighted in the series is the Tasmanian tiger, which was hunted to annihilation by humans in 1936.

Sponsoring art like this helps create a positive conversation about animal conservation and serves as a reminder that the animals that we take for granted today could be gone in the very near future. Dear Director Washington,

I am writing to thank you and your company for the generous and thoughtful commission of the work entitled “Unknown Tourism.” This work successfully sheds a light on animals that we can no longer visit due to extinction. More importantly, this work sparked a conversation about presently endangered animals than might one day be as unreachable as the dodo.

It is vital to continue to highlight the plight that endangered animals face as a result of human actions. While it is important to remember the role that tourism plays in creating endangered species, it is also important to use tourism as a way to encourage people to help endangered animals through things like eco-tourism. I hope that Expedia continues to take steps to promote sustainable tourism.

Thank you for commissioning this beautiful and thoughtful tribute to animals that have already gone extinct and for igniting a conversation about what animals could be next.
