Target: Federal Human Rights Undersecretary Roberto Campa Cifrián
Goal: Reinstate protection program for family of disappeared man threatened with torture and kidnapping.
In Mexico, Victor García, the brother in law of a disappeared man, has allegedly been beaten and threatened with kidnapping in his home by three armed men in an apparent attempt to intimidate him and his family from pursuing their case. This assault comes a few months after their federal protection was removed without warning or explanation.
Victor García has been campaigning campaigning and supporting the families of disappeared people along with his wife Brenda Rangel Ortiz, since her brother, Héctor Rangel Ortiz, disappeared in Northern Mexico in 2009. In the course of their campaign to learn the truth of what happened to him they have allegedly been threatened by members of law enforcement, and detainees. While federal authorities provided no explanation for the withdrawal of protection, they withdrew protection after Brenda Rangel Ortiz traveled to Canada to campaign on disappearances in Mexico.
The latest attack reveals that whatever protections authorities have in place are insufficient. Therefore, the previous regime of protection must be reinstated to ensure Victor García and Brenda Rangel Ortiz have adequate protection. Sign our petition and demand they receive protection.
Dear Undersecretary Cifrián,
I was shocked to hear that Victor García, the brother-in-law of disappearred Héctor Rangel Ortiz, was allegedly a victim of an assault at his home. However, that shock turned to outrage when I learned that his federal protection was rescinded without notice or explanation in July this year. I urge you to reinstate these protections–the existing system is clearly not keeping the family of Héctor Rangel Ortiz safe. Furthermore, this incident must be investigated, and those responsible brought to justice.
Additionally, I believe that after seven years, a concerted effort must be made to determine the fate of Héctor Rangel Ortiz. Those responsible for all and any harm that befell him must be brought to justice, and his family deserves peace.
