Target: Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands
Goal: Commend the Netherlands for their plan to drastically reduce emissions by shutting down all remaining coal plants by 2020.
Dutch parliament has voted for a plan to cut CO2 emissions by 55 percent by 2030, which would mean eradicating all five remaining coal plants in the country by 2020. This bold plan will keep them on track with the guarantees made in the Paris climate agreement and puts the country on the path to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Countries that are taking swift action to cut emissions should be applauded for their efforts to keep temperatures from rising to perilous levels.
After three new coal plants were fired up last year, there was a five percent increase in the country’s CO2 emissions. This dramatic increase was attributed to the new coal plants. The country’s center-right coalition is working hard to appeal this decision and keep the plants running in a limited capacity, but so far the Dutch parliament has held firm in its decision.
While coal may be an inexpensive form of energy, it is very costly from an environmental and humanitarian perspective. Coal is not only a huge pollutant that contributes to climate change, but it also damages the environment when it is mined. Coal mining can destroy forests and pollute waterways. In 2011, the American Lung Association estimated that particle pollution from power plants kills 13,000 Americans per year.
Coal is a dangerous and unsustainable form of energy. It is time that the nations of the world work to transition to green energy sources. Sign this petition to praise the Netherlands for taking a leap toward safe and environmentally friendly energy sources.
Dear Prime Minister Rutte,
I am writing to congratulate you on passing a plan to shut down all coal plants in the Netherlands by 2020. Coal emissions are contributing substantially to rising temperatures and the prompt efforts of the Dutch parliament to limit this, in accordance with the Paris agreement, are highly commendable. Ending coal-fired power plants may save lives that would have been ended by pollution created by coal plants.
I want to encourage you to keep fighting those in the center-right coalition who wish to fight against this plan. Remember that the health of your citizens and the fight against global warming is more important than cheap energy.
This decision made by the Dutch Parliament shows that the Netherlands is a progressive country that cares for the environment and for its citizens. It is my hope that your country continues to be a world leader in implementing environmentally friendly policies. Thank you for your dedication to stopping catastrophic climate change.
