Justice for Dog Nearly Poisoned With Pill-Laden Bait

Target: Tom Wolf, Governor of Pennsylvania

Goal: Increase punishments for animal cruelty in order to ensure that animal abusers such as one who left poisoned bait for a dog can no longer get off with a slap on the wrist.

A German Shepherd is lucky to be alive after someone attempted to poison it with hot dogs filled with pills. Owner Christina Marie Allen suspects that someone had been trying to hurt the animal for a while, as miscellaneous items such as toys, flashlights, and garbage would often turn up in the yard. Recently, she discovered that this person has escalated their reckless behavior when they threw hot dogs laced with blue pills over the fence. The lack of poisoned meat in neighboring yards further suggests that this was a deliberate, targeted attack against the Allen’s dog.

The Luzerne County Police and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) are currently investigating this incident. According to authorities who have questioned the neighbors, there has not yet been a suspect identified. According to Todd Hevner, executive director of the county SPCA, it’s likely that the perpetrator of this crime will be handed down a misdemeanor punishment, likely a fine with a similar cost to a parking ticket. This is due to Pennsylvania’s lax animal protection laws.

Instances of the intentional placement of harmful items, such as drugs, screws, or razor blades, in an attempt to hurt dogs has become all too common. If the perpetrators of these crimes are not properly dealt with, more dogs will be put at risk. Sign the petition below to demand that laws are updated in order to ensure that people who commit gruesome crimes like these are punished appropriately.

Dear Mr. Wolf,

A German Shepherd was nearly poisoned after an unknown suspect laid pill-laden hot dogs for it to find. Had the dog’s owner not found the bait first, the dog could have been seriously harmed or even killed. The owner suspects that the attack is targeted as she has been finding miscellaneous hazards in her yard for a few months. Furthermore, no neighboring dog owners reported finding any hazards.

This dog got lucky. An increasing number of dogs are dying from eating meat laced with screws, razor blades, or poison that is left out with the deliberate intention of harming animals. In order to stop this cruelty, punishments for these types of crimes must be increased. We, the undersigned, ask that you work to implement harsher animal protection laws in your state.
