Protect Voting Rights by Clearing Citizenship Backlog

Voting Rights March

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Order the backlog keeping many thousands of potential voters from being registered to be cleared before the election.

Hundreds of thousands of immigrant citizens could be prevented from voting due to the severe backlog of citizenship applications at the  United States Immigration and Citizenship Services. These are people who want to legally become U.S. citizens and fully participate in the election process to have their voices heard, yet they may be denied this right because the government didn’t allocate enough resources to processing their applications.

Likely due to the extremely anti-immigrant rhetoric of Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for President, the Immigration and Citizenship Services has seen a surge in citizenship applications, resulting in a backlog of over 500,000 potential voters. That many people could have a huge impact on the upcoming presidential election. Because the vast majority of these individuals are likely to vote against Trump, processing these applications in time for them to register to vote could save the country from a disastrous presidency by a massively unqualified and incredibly bigoted man.

All that’s needed to process these applications and get through the backlog is enough people to do the work. It would not take a significant amount of money to pay temporary employees to make this happen. Sign our petition to urge President Obama to do whatever he can to ensure that funds are allocated for the swift processing of this backlog so that hundreds of thousands of people can access their right to vote.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

There are currently over 500,000 applications for citizenship that have been filed by people who have immigrated to the U.S. These applications need to be processed soon or all of these hundreds of thousands of people will not be able to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Unfortunately, there is a lack of resources and people power to deal with this huge backlog.

Not only would a failure to go through this backlog in time deny them the essential American right to vote, it would help Donald Trump. It’s likely that the reason for this sudden surge in citizenship applications is due to the fact that many of these immigrants want to vote against him because of Trump’s extreme anti-immigrant rhetoric and promises to persecute them. You have pledged your support to Hillary Clinton, of course, so ensuring that these applications are processed as soon as possible is within your interest.

Getting more resources to the United States Immigration and Citizenship Services should be within your power as President. Please do everything you can to get more people power on the huge citizenship application backlog to help fight against a disastrous potential Trump presidency.

Sincerely,
