Target: Barack Obama, President of the United States of America
Goal: Thank President Obama for designating the first Atlantic marine national monument.
President Obama has announced the creation of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument–a 4,913-square-mile area off the coast of Cape Cod that contains a vibrant ecosystem. The area has been called an “underwater Yellowstone” due to its wildlife diversity, underwater mountains, and fissures, some of which are deeper than the Grand Canyon.
This uniquely diverse area, the first marine national monument in the Atlantic, will now be protected from commercial activity. The new monument is home to 73 different species of deep-sea corals, as well as numerous fish, whales, sea turtles, and overwintering puffins. Currents weaving through the underwater mountains stir up nutrients from the deep-sea canyons, and these nutrients travel up to the ocean surface, sustaining a rich and diverse array of marine life.
The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has called the creation of this monument “epic.” Preservation of this area, roughly the size of Connecticut and right next door to our nation’s most populous coastline, will have huge effects in helping the ocean resist climate change. Obama has designated more national monuments during his time in office than any previous president; the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument will now be the 27th Obama has created using the Antiquities Act, which allows him to bypass Congressional approval.
This is a massive win for conservationists. Rhea Suh, the president of the NRDC, says: “President Obama is conserving the crown jewels of our nation’s seascape.” The Audubon Society’s vice president is especially pleased that puffins will be a part of this story, noting that they are now protected on their breeding islands and their winter habitat. Show your appreciation for Obama’s action to preserve this marine treasure on behalf of the puffins, the corals, the Atlantic Ocean, and the entire planet.
Dear President Obama,
Thank you for your creation of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. This is an epic environmental move and may be instrumental in helping the Atlantic Ocean and its inhabitants gain resilience in the face of climate change.
Your continued dedication to the preservation of our ecosystems and the future of our planet is admirable and deserves recognition. The preservation of 87,000 acres of Maine forest in the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, your efforts to expand the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, and now your designation of the first Atlantic marine national monument–all of these efforts make you one of the most dedicated presidents to conservation in the history of our country. At a time when our planet is desperately in need of environmental protection, these truly are monumental victories, and I applaud them.
