Protect Political Activist Nearly Abducted By Armed Men

Free West Papua

Target: Head of the Indonesian National Police Tito Karnavian

Goal: Ensure the protection of an opposition political activist who was recently the target of an attempted abduction.

A political activist has been the target of an attempted abduction. Augustinus Aud, a spokesperson for the West Papuan National Committee (KNPB) and the organizer of recent peaceful protests against government policies in the province of West Papua, was reportedly attacked at his home in Sorong, West Papua in the early hours of the morning by at least 10 heavily armed men.

The assailants, armed with rifles, banged on the door, broke windows, and shouted for Augustinus to exit his house, but he refused and managed to call for help. When several friends came to his aid, the armed men left.

Augustinus Aud has, for the past few months, been organizing both press conferences and peaceful demonstrations in support of Papuan independence. He has also spoken out against alleged human rights violations committed by security forces in the province.

This attempted abduction is particularly concerning as two years ago another member of KNPB was abducted and then killed. Sign our petition and call for authorities in West Papua to take measures to ensure Mr. Aud’s safety and to open an independent and transparent investigation into the threats against him.

Dear General Karnavian,

I was disturbed to hear reports of the attempted abduction of Augustinus Aud in Sorong, West Papua. Given the recent abduction and murder of Martinus Yohame, he has reason to fear for his life and safety.

As a peaceful political activist, Mr. Aud has the right to freely express his opinions. Threats of violence and other forms of intimidation undermine these rights. I urge you to do everything in your power to ensure the safety and rights of Mr. Aud and other political activists in West Papua.

Secondly, the culprits of this attempted abduction, as well as numerous other threats, are still at large. Their continued freedom undermines the rule of law in West Papua and encourages their methods of curtailing political discussion. Therefore, I urge you to open an independent and transparent investigation into this incident to bring those responsible to justice.
