End Award That Congratulates Police for Not Shooting Someone

Target: Charlie Beck, Los Angeles Police Department Chief

Goal: End the “Preservation of Life” award that congratulates Los Angeles police officers for not shooting people.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck gave out awards earlier this month to police officers who did not shoot people even when their lives may have been in danger. During a time when police brutality and unjust deaths of citizens by police are in the national spotlight, it’s inappropriate to reward officers simply for not shooting people. Demand Chief Beck end this distasteful and improper award.

The LAPD has been the source of numerous cases of police brutality in the past year alone, with Black Lives Matter protestors staging a weeks long sit-in protest at the LA City Hall. On top of that, the department has a longstanding history of abuse by police officers.

When the department is dealing with so many of these cases, not being transparent and blocking justice for those who are killed at the hands of police, it should not be rewarding those who do what they’re supposed to do by deescalating a situation without shooting anyone.

It’s disrespectful to American citizens who are increasingly concerned with the death of innocent people by police to reward the so-called good guys when the department is not even attempting to stop the bad guys or have them face consequences. The award is a slap in the face to social justice and police brutality activists who have made it clear that the department must address the issues that are infecting the department.

The people of Los Angeles are demanding real solutions to police brutality that include reforms and accountability, not some offensive reward that serves as a pat on the back for not murdering innocent people. Demand that Chief Beck renounce this award.

Dear Chief Beck,

As you know, your department has been under fire for all kinds of police brutality ranging from police beatings to unexplained and violent deaths of unarmed people. You blatantly refuse to acknowledge activists’ concerns about these issues and make no effort to provide solutions to these serious problems.

Instead you have chosen to hand out awards to officers who don’t shoot people. Even in wars, our soldiers are trained to use every possible measure to deescalate a situation without shooting the enemy. Police officers don’t deserve a special pat on the back for not shooting or killing people.

This award is a further show of arrogance and lack of responsibility by the LAPD. I demand you end this inappropriate award and commit to more ways to ensure it’s the norm for officers to not shoot people.

  1. Nick Percival says:

The problem is not in the award but rather in the situation that prompted the award. Yes, the standard should be that the police not be trigger happy. However, this award is aimed at moving this dept toward that standard. Removing the award would be counterproductive.

  2. American oinker pig cops are known internationally as corrupt, animal murdering filthbags who love to shoot anytging that moves.
