Reform Inhumane and Abusive Prison System

Target: Julie L. Jones, Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections

Goal: Reform the understaffed, dangerous Florida prison system in order to fight inmate deaths and abuse.

Thousands of inmates across the nation, including in Florida, protested horrible prison conditions like abuse, slave labor, inadequate healthcare, overcrowding, violent and unexplained inmate deaths and long-term confinement. Demand that Florida reform its prison system in order to protect inmates from these injustices.

The protests are on the 45th anniversary of the biggest prison riots in U.S. history in Attica, New York, where inmates protested racism, physical abuse, lack of food and slave labor. The protests were meant to tackle many of these same issues 45 years later through hunger strikes, sit-ins and refusing to work.

Florida prisons have been so understaffed over the past year that many inmates were in forced confinement in their dorms because there’s not enough staff to guard them during recreation. It’s reportedly hot in the dorms, with recreation being one of the few times inmates get relief. Because of the understaffing, many officers at Florida prisons are inexperienced with little training and as young as 19 years old.

In the past two years alone, Florida prisons have been investigated for the death of a mentally ill inmate by locking him a shower with scalding hot water for over an hour, a plethora of other violent or unexplained inmate deaths, physically abusing and starving mentally ill inmates, and a record number of use-of-force incidents.

It’s reprehensible that these abuses are continuing unchallenged and understaffing issues are not being solved. It’s vital to the safety of both the inmates and guards that there is enough adequately trained staff at every prison. Inmates should not fear violent deaths and awful living conditions. Demand Florida reform its prison system in order to fight these issues.

Dear Secretary Jones,

A series of protests took place across Florida prisons earlier this month to take a stand against all kinds of abuse against inmates ranging from abuse to starvation, to the unjust, unexplained and often brutal death of inmates. These allegations by inmates absolutely cannot be ignored, especially when your prison is the third-largest in the country.

Florida prisons have been investigated for a variety of awful issues in addition to the ones named above. This is unacceptable and cannot continue. During a time when criminal justice reform is in the spotlight and is being demanded by the American people, you must stand up to address these problems in your system. I demand you reform the prison system in order to protect the lives of inmates.
