Target: Guangzhou Ocean and Fishery Bureau in Guangzhou, China
Goal: Save animals from cruel imprisonment by cancelling the Grandview Mall’s expansion plans.
A Chinese shopping mall, already notorious for hosting the “world’s saddest polar bear,” has announced plans to expand their zoo to include more animals.
The Guangzhou Grandview Aquarium gained international scorn after footage emerged of a polar bear named Pizza. Dubbed “the world’s saddest polar bear,” Pizza lives in cramped conditions that are entirely unsuitable. In addition to the polar bear, the mall also houses beluga whales, arctic foxes, walrus calves, and more, all believed to be living in unnatural and unhealthy exhibits.
Instead of bowing to pressure, officials have expressed interest in acquiring other species such as pandas and white tigers. The planned expansion would see the creation of an indoor zoo, 5,900 square meters in size. “I don’t believe there would be enough space or that they would be able to provide adequately for those animals,” said Dave Neals, Welfare Director of Animals Asia, an ecological charity that has already tried to free the imprisoned animals.
The Guangzhou Grandview Aquarium must stop keeping these poor animals in captivity. Sign the petition below to save further animals from being trapped in this inhumane place.
Dear Guangzhou Ocean and Fishery Bureau,
I am writing to express my grave concern about the recently announced plans to expand the Guangzhou Grandview Aquarium. The location has already been roundly criticized for its awful treatment of Pizza the polar bear, but rather than accept this international condemnation and provide a better home for this poor animal, officials have decided to imprison more animals in an unnatural and entirely unsuitable zoo.
These animals deserve open space and natural habitats, neither of which the planned expansion can provide. To imprison more animals would be to sentence them to a life of pain, sadness, and discomfort. I urge you to immediately intervene and cancel any plans for expansion.
