Target: Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee Chairman
Goal: Do not prevent Republicans who have refused to endorse Donald Trump from running for office in the future.
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has insinuated that former presidential primary candidates for the Republican Party, including Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, and John Kasich, may be prevented from ever running for president again if they do not endorse Donald Trump as the party’s presidential nominee.
“If they’re thinking they’re going to run again some day,” he said, “I think that we’re going to evaluate…the nomination process and I don’t think it’s going to be that easy for them.” Priebus cited the state of South Carolina, which only allows candidates who have pledged support for the presidential nominee to have their name appear on a ballot. Priebus hinted at working to enact regulations like this in different states.
Priebus cannot and should not punish politicians who have put country before party. Cruz, Kasich, Bush, and others who have refused to endorse Donald Trump have been understandably discouraged and repulsed by the candidate’s hateful and divisive rhetoric and by the party’s alt-right direction.
Other political regimes and parties have punished its members for not following orders and pledging support to their leader. But this has only happened in dictatorships and other authoritarian regimes. There is no place for this in a democratic society. Regardless of whether one agrees or not with the political platform of politicians like Cruz, Bush, and Kasich, all should agree that they should be praised for putting conscience, principles, and the good of the nation above problematic party politics.
Sign the petition to demand that Priebus not punish the former primary candidates. Priebus is bullying and threatening people who have stood up for their principles. This only says more about the Trump campaign’s willingness to lie and scheme its way to the presidency through threats and fear.
Dear Chairman Priebus,
You recently said that the former primary candidates in the Republican Party who have refused to endorse Donald Trump as the party’s nominee may be prevented from running for president in the future. Although you did not name any names, John Kasich, Ted Cruz, and Jeb Bush are the most notable Republicans who have not endorsed the controversial nominee.
You cannot punish these politicians for following their conscience. They saw the harmful, bigoted rhetoric of your party’s candidate and witnessed the divide and violence it has stirred in the nation. Many times, these candidates and their family members were the target of Trump’s viscous and personal attacks. They put principles above party politics, as it should be. The same cannot be said for a majority of your fellow party members.
You are bullying these candidates for standing their ground. History has shown us that nothing good can come of threatening politicians and forcing them to fall in line with others. This fear mongering and these threats are the facets of authoritarian regimes, not a democratic system. I demand that you revoke your threats and not prevent any Republican from running for office simply because they refuse to endorse the party’s nominee.
