Drop Charges Against Dakota Access Pipeline Journalist

Target: Chris Myers, U.S. Attorney, District of North Dakota

Goal: Drop trespassing charges against the journalist who filmed the Dakota Access Pipeline security attacking protesters.

The journalist who filmed the Dakota Access Pipeline protesters being brutalized by attack dogs and private security guards with pepper spray is being charged with trespassing. A warrant has even been issued for her arrest. The Journalist, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, is calling this “an unacceptable violation of freedom of the press.”

The company responsible for this pipeline is clearly just upset about being exposed for their violent attempts to suppress a peaceful protest against a project that is likely to poison the water that local Native American communities depend upon. It will also guarantee that more crude oil is taken out of the ground and burned, bringing the Earth ever closer to the brink of utterly catastrophic climate change.

If it hadn’t been for Goodman’s bravery and hard work, the nation might never have become outraged enough to turn the federal government’s attention to the issue, resulting in the halting of the pipeline’s construction. The fact that she’s being charged for trespassing is a clear intimidation tactic designed to send the message to other journalists that they’ll face similar trouble for covering violence against pipeline protesters.

Oil corporations cannot be allowed to get away with suppressing freedom of the press in addition to poisoning the planet. Sign our petition to demand all charges against Amy Goodman be dropped immediately.

Dear Mr. Myers,

It’s come to my attention that criminal charges have been brought up against Amy Goodman, a reporter for Democracy Now! She is being charged with trespassing and a warrant has been issued for her arrest. The charges are entirely based on the fact that she was filming the recent attacks upon the Dakota Access Pipeline protesters involving vicious dogs and pepper spray.

One of the main pillars this nation was built upon is freedom of the press. The problem here is not that someone filmed a brutal attack upon peaceful protesters, but that an oil corporation hired a private security firm that ended up violently attacking them. You should be filing charges against those that committed violence, not against those who reported on it.

By filing these charges, you are engaging in clear intimidation tactics against the press–a blatant violation of First Amendment rights. I demand that you immediately drop these ridiculous charges and cease engaging in the oppression of journalists.
